Have a good cup of coffee and help save our mountains. |
| The Appalachian Mountains are being destroyed by what some might call "Progress". We at Mag's Coffee Shop want to take a stand against the destruction of our mountains and we need your help. |
"Mountaintop removal is an extreme form of strip mining that extracts coal by using explosives to literally blow up ridgelines to provide easy access to thin coal seams below, with the leftover rock, rubble and mining waste dumped into valley streams below. To date some 500 Appalachian peaks have been flattened, leaving behind scarred moonscapes, polluted water and shell-shocked communities."

The Myth of Mountaintop Removal Reclamation

A study by Appalachian Voices, which analyzed recent aerial imagery of eastern Kentucky, southern West Virginia, southwest Virginia and eastern Tennessee, confirms for the first time the extent of mountaintop removal throughout the region; nearly half of which has taken place in Kentucky.
“The fact that coal companies can blast away the tops of 500 of the oldest and most biodiverse mountains on the continent shows an utter disrespect for the communities that have to live

| Mag's Coffee Shop Is Getting Involved |
My daughter, husband and I attended a concert on May 19,2010, featuring Emmylou Harris, Dave Matthews, Kathy Mattea, Big Kenny, Naomi Judd and other great entertainers. It was not until we arrived that we learned this was a benefit concert called "Music Saves Mountains".
Musicians are getting involved in the fight to save our Appalachian Mountains.
We at Mag's Coffee Shop are not singers, but we do have a voice and we want one small bag of coffee to tell everyone that we want the mountain top removal mining to stop.
We have named one of our coffees - "Appalachia" and the label reads:
"Mountaintop removal mining is not just devastating the region's environment and quality of life, it is also steadily crushing the heart of Appalachia."
Our "Appalachia" coffee has arrived and we hope you will come by and purchase a bag.
By doing so, you will also be saying that the destruction of our Appalachian Mountains is wrong and must stop.
We are new to this fight and will welcome any suggestions as to how we can better promote "Appalachia" and be more involved in this battle against the coal miners and our lawmakers. |
"Today, the Appalachians are being ravaged by the most destructive form of coal mining ever devised. Companies are blowing entire mountaintops to smithereens to get at the thin seams of coal below. Already 500 peaks have been leveled, wide swaths of forests have been clearcut, miles of streams have been destroyed or polluted, and countless communities have been harmed by the hunger for fossil fuel."

This special coffee will sell for a retail price of $9.95 and the proceeds from the sale of this coffee will help support the fight to end this disaster. |

Our mountains were loaned to us for safekeeping for a while and we really aren't doing a very good job.
Don't believe what you hear - one person CAN make a difference!
